Thanksgiving brings with it the opportunity to get together with family and friends. From traditional turkey and stuffing to pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce, there are a plethora of dishes to choose from. But how do you know if a recipe is a good idea? Here are a few classic Thanksgiving dishes to try this year.

Ambrosia Salad

Ambrosia Salad is a classic Thanksgiving dish that can be spruced up in different ways. Ambrosia salad is fruit-based and is topped with marshmallows, whipped cream, and coconut.

  • Butternut Squash and Leek Stuffing: A favorite alternative to traditional stuffing, this recipe is made with leeks and butternut squash.  If you like the taste of sage, this is the recipe for you.
  • Cornbread-Sage Dressing: A cornbread dressing uses ground pork sausage as a base. Diced vegetables and herbs are added to make it spicy.
  • Fennel, Apple, and Celery Root Slaw with Pecans: A fresh salad that incorporates the harvest flavors of fall. The slaw is made from the fennel bulb, celery root, apples, pecans, cider vinegar, olive oil, and cider.
  • Green Bean Casserole with Crispy Onions: This dish is made with green beans, breadcrumbs, onion soup mix, milk, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, crispy onions, butter crackers, and parsley flakes.
  • Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows: Sweet potatoes are mashed with heavy cream, brown sugar, milk, marshmallows, light corn syrup, vanilla extract, and salt.
  • Pumpkin Pie with Whipped Cream: The classic Thanksgiving dessert . This pie is made from pumpkin puree, evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, salt, and vanilla extract.
  • Pecan Pie: Another classic Thanksgiving dessert, this pie is made from pecans, salt, light corn syrup, eggs, sugar, white Karo Syrup, vanilla extract, and butter. 
  • Sweet Potato Casserole: This dish is made from sweet potatoes, brown sugar, pecans, evaporated milk, eggs, butter, salt, and vanilla extract.
  • Corn Pudding: This side dish is usually prepared with corn kernels and cream mixed together and baked in a casserole dish.
  • Maple Glazed Acorn Squash: This dish is made from acorn squash, vegetable oil, salt, maple syrup, water, and brown sugar.  
  • Baked Pears with Cinnamon Yogurt Sauce: This dish is prepared from pears, sugar, salt, ground cinnamon, low-fat plain yogurt, and chopped walnuts. 

Apple Cranberry Crisp: This dish is made from apples, cranberries, brown sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, allspice, and salt.

Things to Check Out in Collingwood This Summer

After the Spring, Collingwood is back for summer! The weather is getting warmer, and the days are getting longer. As the days turn longer, you can bet that the vibrant colours of Collingwood will be back to give you a much-needed dose of sunshine. So, what’s on the agenda? 

Summer in Collingwood, Ontario, is a great time to visit the city. You can enjoy the warm weather and the many festivals in town. Some are just plain fun, like the Collingwood Summer Music Festival and the Collingwood Pride, while others are more for the foodies like the Vegan Market or Lobster Fest. Collingwood Summer Music Festival

The Collingwood Summer Music Festival scheduled throughout July features many bands, live music, either online or drive-in style. It is a popular summer festival in Ontario where local and national and international artists and bands, and musicians perform for the festival-goers.

The Vegan Market

Did you know Collingwood has its own vegan market? There are lots of vegan products, such as jewelry and clothing. The market is a great way to support local businesses that promote a healthy lifestyle and save money at the same time. They have a great selection of vegan treats and great gifts for the summer season! The market runs every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., located at the Millenium Overlook Park. 

3 Day Climb Away Retreat

Available year-round, this three-day retreat features climbing, hiking, yoga, and meditation for people of all skill levels. This trip is a perfect place to get away, relax, and connect with the community. If you are looking to master climbing, lose weight, or just want to have a great time away from the pressures of work and home, then this is the place for you.

Collingwood Pride

From July 15-18, Collingwood will be hosting its first-ever virtual pride event. The event will feature an array of speakers celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Hosting the event is Leslie Roberts from CTV Morning Live. The event is also free to register. 

Lobster Fest

Start your summer off right by joining a lakeside summer kickoff with live music featuring a one-and-a-half pound whole Canadian lobster and more. There will be a live band and a few other surprises. You can check it out on July 15th. Included with the ticket are a three-course dinner and a beer.

Fun Things to Do in Collingwood, ON This February

Even though it’s the shortest month of the year, there are tons of fun things that people can do, especially in Collingwood, ON. Event #1 – Reconciliation Art Project

Anyone who appreciates indigenous art will want to make the time to check out the Reconciliation Art Project. The event is formally titled ‘Call to Action #83: Eight Indigenous and Eight Non-Indigenous Artists’ Quest for Truth and Reconciliation. This project consists of the work of 16 artists (eight indigenous and eight non-indigenous) and celebrates their hunt for truth and reconciliation. Anyone who wants to see the art can visit the Collingwood Council Chambers on February 7th, 14th and 21st from 11:00 A.M to 1:00 P.M.

Event #2 – Collingwood February Family Jam 2019

 

Who doesn’t enjoy spending time with their family? Anyone who is looking for a great way to spend their Family Day should head over to Central Park for the Collingwood February Family Jam 2019. This is a free, event that runs nearly all day long – from 9:00 A.M. to 9 P.M. This fantastic event offers a wide range of activities and events including skating, basketball, button making and more! Event #3 – Magic of Children’s Art Show

 

The Magic of Children’s Art Show has been an ongoing event in Collingwood, ON for 25 years. To celebrate their 25th anniversary, they are inviting children to register their favorite piece of art in this year’s art show. Visitors can check out the art at the Collingwood Public Library on February 23rd from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. and February 24th from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. Essential Oils Workshop for the Holidays

 

Essential oils are a great way to improve the smell and quality of the air in your home. Be sure to swing by the Essential Oils Workshop for the Holidays hosted by AromaTouch certified practitioners Eda Redmond and Linda Teeter. This workshop is the perfect way to incorporate aromatherapy into your winter schedule. The workshop takes place on December 3rd at 7 PM at the Collingwood Library. Technology for Beginners

 

Technology is constantly changing, making it difficult to stay updated and on top of the new trends. This is especially true for some of the older Collingwood residents. Thankfully, there is a multi-week program at the Collingwood Public Library called Technology for Beginners. This program is made to help the residents of Collingwood have a better understanding of their devices. Technology for Beginners covers a number of great topics like using PayPal, precautionary safety measures and more. The event takes place on December 5th, 12th, and 19th at 10:30 AM.

 

A RatPacked Christmas Comedy Hour

 

The winter blues can be all too real in December; that’s why it’s important to go out and laugh once in a while. Anyone in need of a good chuckle should head over to the Simcoe Street Theatre for A RatPacked Christmas Comedy Hour. This is a 2-day comedy event that takes place from December 7th to the 8th. Hosted by comedians James Godfrey and Kevin Finn (along with a “crooner” Thomas Finn), the event is sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face. The event also features Rebeca Rain as a special guest. For those who constantly have their nose in a book, we have a treat for you. Swing by the Collingwood Public Library on November 8th at 7 p.m. for Fall 2018 Author Talks. This chat will be lead by Geoff Taylor, who will be discussing his novel Tom Thomson’s Last Bonfire. Taylor will be giving his own perspective on the mysteries of Algonquin Park and the circumstances surrounding the Group of Seven member’s death. The event is free. Blood Donor Clinic

 

Although it may not be the most entertaining thing to do, it is extremely important to give blood for those who need it. The Collingwood Community Blood Donor Clinic is hosting a blood drive at the Royal Canadian Legion starting at 2 p.m. on November 14th. It is important to donate blood and helps build a strong sense of community. PumpkinFerno

Taking place in Discovery Harbour, the award winning PumpkinFerno is a must see this season.  From Thursday to Sunday, October 4th to 21st and every evening from October 22nd to 30th, visit the harbour from 7 – 10pm and see the pumpkins aglow.  When dark strikes, the handcrafted pumpkins are set alight, allowing visitors to experience the haunting magic and the impending Terror in the Terror Zone. Suitable for all ages, bring the kids and enjoy your evening at the harbour amidst the pumpkins!

Collingwood Half Marathon and 10K

A fall favourite that brings the community together, whether you run or spectate, this annual Run Collingwood event is not to be missed. Offering you the rare opportunity to run through the city without having to wade through cars or pedestrians, the October 6th run route allows you to spend time along the lake, see the city sights, and be cheered on by the amazing community spirit of Collingwood residents. It is hard to believe that Labour Day weekend is upon us and that the summer is slowly coming to a close. Summer Sundown

As always, you can count on Blue Mountain to have big plans. From September 1st – 3rd, head to the mountain for Summer Sundown. A weekend filled with activities for the kids, hiking, biking, competitions, street performances, lots of food, and much more, this event is suitable for the whole family. The activities will start in the morning and run for the day, with concerts scheduled to take place until late into the evening. You can purchase tickets for single events, single days, or choose to get a weekend pass. And of course, there is lots to do that is totally free! The ideal way to send the season off and get the kids ready to head back to school, be sure to plan your schedule accordingly to be able to take advantage of everything the festival has to offer.

Wasaga Beach

The popular beach, where you likely spent much of your summer time, will offer one more celebration in honour of the end of official beach season.  The 3rd annual Inflate-a-Fest will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 31st to September 2nd at Playland Square Park. During the festival, participants will be able to enjoy heaps of entertainment, including the Hubbard’s Hustlers and Sarah Smith as well as endless inflatable fun. The event will finish off on Sunday night with Wasaga Beach’s annual Memories of Summer fireworks display, at 8:30pm. Come join organizers, volunteers, and fellow community members in celebrating a “wonderful summer season.”

Moonlight Market

If you have been heading to the Collingwood Market all summer, taking advantage of nature’s bounty in the prime harvest season, you likely know all about how great it is and how much it has to offer.  To step things up for the end of the summer, the town presents a special market: Moonlight Market. Join all your usual market friends and stall owners on the evening of September 1st, from 6-10pm to see the market by night.  You’ll have access to all the regular products, plus be able to take advantage of entertainment, additional food and craft vendors, and be swept up into the beauty that is the town when you see it lit up by lanterns and twinkle lights. Last Minute Plans: 3 Things to Do Before the Kids go Back to School

It’s hard to believe that it is over halfway through August, and that we are staring down the end of summer. Whether you have had a jam-packed last few weeks or feel like you haven’t quite done enough and want to get in that one last activity, here are three things to do before the summer holidays officially come to a close.

Visit the Library

There is lots going on at the Collingwood Public Library for the remainder of August and you can take in everything from knitting and painting vases, to yoga, chess, and learning how to code.  Here are some special events you don’t want to miss:

Writing Workshop

Give the kids a head start on writing for school, by attending a writing workshop with Brian Henry.  Coming in to educate attendees on book publishing, how to be a better writer, sending pitches, and more. Henry will be joined by guest speaker, literary agent Paige Sisley who will discuss being in a publishing agency and how aspiring writers can get into the market. A daylong event, from 10-4 on August 18th, be sure to visit the website to learn more and book your place.

Essential Oils Workshop

Learn how to use aromatherapy to help with concentration, focus and to improve mental alertness.  Aromatouch Therapy certified practitioners, Edna Redmond and Linda Teeter will show you how from 10:30am to noon on August 25th.

Harry Potter Day

Also taking place on August 25th, at the Meaford Library, Harry Potter Day is must add to the calendar for fids who are fans of the magical wizardry. A fundraiser for the library, the library will transform into Hogwarts, and everyone is welcome to don their wizard costumes, grab their magic wands, and come pay a visit.

Village Vibe

Blue mountain’s Village Vibe, on August 18th and 19th, let’s you take in the best of the village before the summer ends.  Hit the streets and enjoy a Scavenger hunt or a magic show, and take advantage of one of the many live music gigs happening from 3pm until late. Kids can participate in story time by the pond, take ukulele lessons, or join up with Mom and Dad on a morning hike led by Columbia. Outdoor Adventure

Make the most of the sunny Saturdays left in August and join in on Outdoor Adventure held every Saturday (weather permitting) by the Collingwood Youth Centre. Open to youth age 7-18 and parents, check out the website to see what is on offer each week as well as details for meet-up time and location.

Summer may be on the downward trajectory towards the end, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t lots to still enjoy and take advantage of.  Make the last few weekends count as you get outside, get involved in the community, and learn something new in the process.
